This recipe comes together in 25 minutes, making it a perfect weeknight dinner that combines delicious flavors and balanced textures in one satisfying meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Sauce

  • 1/4 cup soy sauce (low sodium preferred)
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon sugar or honey (optional)

Main Ingredients

  • 8 ounces lo mein noodles (or spaghetti substitute)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (or neutral oil like canola)
  • 1/2 pound beef (flank steak, sirloin, or skirt steak), thinly sliced
  • 2 cups broccoli florets
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 1/4 cup sliced onion or green onions

Garnish

  • Sesame seeds
  • Sliced green onions

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Noodles: Cook the lo mein noodles according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside, tossing with a little sesame oil to prevent sticking.
  2. Make the Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, sesame oil, cornstarch, rice vinegar (if using), and sugar or honey until smooth. Set aside.
  3. Cook the Beef: Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the sliced beef and stir-fry for about 2-3 minutes, until browned but not fully cooked through. Remove the beef from the pan and set aside.
  4. Stir-Fry Vegetables: In the same pan, add a small amount of oil if needed. Add the minced garlic, grated ginger, and sliced onions or green onions. Stir-fry for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
Then add the broccoli florets and continue to stir-fry for 3-4 minutes until the broccoli is bright green and crisp-tender.
  5. Combine Beef and Sauce: Return the beef to the pan with the vegetables. Pour in the prepared sauce and stir everything together, cooking for another 2-3 minutes, until the sauce thickens and the beef is cooked through.
  6. Add Noodles: Add the cooked noodles to the pan and toss well to coat everything evenly with the sauce.
  7. Serve: Remove from heat. Garnish with a sprinkling of sesame seeds and sliced green onions. Serve hot and enjoy your delicious Beef and Broccoli Lo Mein!

Notes

  • For a vegetarian version, substitute beef with firm tofu or extra vegetables like mushrooms and bell peppers.
  • Use low sodium soy sauce to reduce salt content.
  • If lo mein noodles are unavailable, spaghetti or other egg noodles can be used as substitutes.
  • To add heat, include chili flakes or a few drops of chili oil when stir-frying.
  • Ensure the cornstarch is fully dissolved in the sauce to avoid lumps.
