Description

This Classic Patty Melt recipe brings together juicy, seasoned ground beef patties layered with melted cheddar and provolone cheeses, sandwiched between buttered rye bread and toasted to golden perfection. Finished with a tangy homemade sauce, it’s a comforting and satisfying sandwich perfect for lunch or dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

Bread & Butter

  • 6 slices rye bread
  • 6 tablespoons butter, softened

Beef Patties

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 3/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder

Sauce

  • 3 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon sweet relish
  • 1 teaspoon sugar

Cheese

  • 6 slices cheddar cheese
  • 6 slices provolone cheese

Instructions

  1. Prep the Bread: Butter one side of each slice of rye bread evenly. Set aside the buttered slices for later assembly.
  2. Make the Patties: In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef with black pepper, salt, and onion powder. Mix gently to blend the seasonings without overworking the meat. Shape the mixture into three equal-sized patties.
  3. Cook the Patties: Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Place the patties in the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side to sear. Then reduce the heat to low and continue cooking until the internal temperature reaches 160°F, ensuring they are fully cooked through.
  4. Make the Sauce: In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, sweet relish, and sugar. Stir well until all ingredients are thoroughly mixed. Set the sauce aside.
  5. Assemble the Patty Melts: Heat another skillet over medium-low heat. Place the buttered bread slices butter-side down onto the skillet. On each slice, layer 2 slices of cheddar cheese, one cooked beef patty, and 2 slices of provolone cheese. Spread the prepared sauce on the unbuttered side of a second slice of bread and place it sauce-side down on top of the cheese layers, completing the sandwich.
  6. Cook: Toast each sandwich for 2-3 minutes per side, pressing lightly to help melt the cheese and toast the bread to a golden brown. Carefully flip and repeat on the other side. Repeat these steps to make all three patty melts.

Notes

  • Ensure the beef patties reach an internal temperature of 160°F for food safety.
  • Butter the bread generously to achieve a crispy, golden crust.
  • The sauce adds a tangy sweetness that balances the rich beef and melted cheese.
  • You can substitute rye bread with sourdough or white bread if preferred.
  • For an extra flavor boost, caramelized onions can be added to the sandwich.
