Ingredients
Scale
French Toast Base
- 1 (16-oz) loaf French bread, cut into bite-sized pieces
- 2 cups whole milk
- ½ cup sugar
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 6 large eggs
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
Topping
- ¼ cup all-purpose flour
- ¼ cup brown sugar
- ¼ cup butter, softened
- ¼ tsp ground cinnamon
Glaze
- ¾ cup powdered sugar
- 2 Tbsp milk
- ¼ tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
- Prepare the egg mixture: In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, sugar, vanilla extract, and ground cinnamon until fully combined.
- Soak the bread: Add the bite-sized French bread pieces to the egg mixture, tossing to coat thoroughly. Allow the bread to soak for at least 30 minutes, stirring occasionally to ensure all pieces absorb the mixture evenly.
- Transfer to slow cooker: Spray the inside of a 6-quart slow cooker with nonstick cooking spray. Pour the soaked bread and egg mixture into the slow cooker, spreading it evenly.
- Make the topping: In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar, all-purpose flour, softened butter, and ground cinnamon, stirring until it forms a crumbly mixture. Sprinkle this topping evenly over the bread mixture in the slow cooker.
- Cook the casserole: Cover the slow cooker with its lid. Cook on HIGH for 1â…“ to 2 hours or on LOW for about 4 hours, until the eggs are fully set and the topping is golden and slightly crisp.
- Prepare the glaze: In a small bowl, mix together the powdered sugar, vanilla extract, milk, and ground cinnamon until smooth and pourable.
- Serve: Drizzle the glaze over the cooked French toast casserole before serving. Enjoy warm.
Notes
- You can substitute French bread with brioche or challah for an even richer taste.
- For a dairy-free version, replace whole milk and butter with plant-based alternatives.
- The soaking time can be extended overnight in the refrigerator for deeper flavor absorption.
- Adjust the sweetness by varying the amount of sugar in the egg mixture and topping.
- Ensure the slow cooker lid stays closed during cooking to maintain consistent heat.
