Ingredients
Scale
Steak and Vegetables
- 1 lb ribeye steak, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 8 oz mushrooms, sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (optional)
Assembly
- 4 hoagie rolls (or sub rolls)
- 4 slices provolone cheese (or American cheese)
- 1 tablespoon butter (for toasting rolls)
Instructions
- Prepare the Steak: Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the thinly sliced ribeye steak, season with salt and pepper, and cook until browned and cooked through, about 3-5 minutes. Remove from skillet and set aside.
- Sauté Vegetables: In the same skillet, add the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Add sliced onions and mushrooms, cooking over medium heat until softened and caramelized, about 7-8 minutes. Add minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute until fragrant.
- Combine Steak and Vegetables: Return the cooked steak to the skillet with the onions and mushrooms. Stir in Worcestershire sauce if using, and cook together for 2 minutes to meld flavors. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper as needed.
- Toast the Rolls: Spread butter on the inside of the hoagie rolls. In a separate skillet over medium heat, toast the rolls butter-side down until golden brown and crisp, about 2 minutes.
- Assemble the Sandwiches: Divide the steak and vegetable mixture evenly among the toasted hoagie rolls. Top each with a slice of provolone cheese. If desired, briefly return the assembled sandwiches to the skillet covered, or under a broiler, just until the cheese melts, about 1-2 minutes.
- Serve: Serve the Philly Cheese Steak Sandwiches hot and enjoy immediately.
Notes
- For a cheesier option, add more slices of cheese or use a combination of cheeses like American and provolone.
- Substitute ribeye with sirloin or flank steak for a leaner option.
- Adding bell peppers can enhance the veggie content and flavor.
- Use hoagie rolls or any sturdy sandwich roll to hold fillings well.
- Worcestershire sauce is optional but adds a deeper umami flavor.
